Latest Headlines - 10 Jan 2011

  *Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool *
Steven Gerrard was sent off as Ryan Giggs's second-minute penalty proved enough to send Manchester United into the fourth round of the FA Cup, ruining Kenny Dalglish's emotional return as Liverpool manager. The tie was barely 30 seconds old when Daniel Agger was adjudged to have fouled Dimitar Berbatov in the box and Giggs converted the spot-kick with ease. Liverpool responded well, but their hopes of a comeback were hit hard when Gerrard was shown the red card for diving in rashly on Michael Carrick just after the half-hour mark.

*Adams takes third World Darts title *
Martin Adams clinched his third BDO World Darts title after overcoming a spirited challenge from Lakeside debutant Dean Winstanley. 'Wolfie', the defending champion, looked to be in all kinds of trouble when he trailed 5-4, but he drew on all his experience to triumph 7-5. Adams made a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead, including a 161 checkout. But Winstanley recovered and went 4-3 and then 5-4 ahead but his nerve failed and Adams capitalised for victory.

*Africa Golf Open*
Open champion Louis Oosthuizen held his nerve in a three-way play-off with England's Chris Wood and Spain's Manuel Quiros to clinch the Africa Open. Oosthuizen, the leader going into the final round, proved strongest after the trio finished on 16 under.

*Soderling moves up to World N° 4 after taking Brisbane title *
Top seed Robin Soderling brushed aside Andy Roddick to win the Brisbane International title 6-3 7-5. The Swede broke defending champion Roddick early in the contest to comfortably take the first set. Midway through the second at 4-4, Roddick slipped on rainwater that had seeped through the arena's roof and play was delayed to mop up the court. Soderling broke again in the 11th game before closing out the match to end the event without dropping a set. The victory means he will move above Andy Murray to fourth in the world rankings and be seeded number four at the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on 17 January.

* Twenty20: India edge South Africa in Ntini's last performance *
India defeated South Africa by 21 runs in fast bowler Makhaya Ntini's final match for his country in Durban. Morne van Wyk put on 67 to lead the hosts' chase of 169 in the first cricket match at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a 2010 football World Cup venue. But India took 4-20 midway through the innings as South Africa fell short. Earlier, India made 168-6 with Rohit Sharma top-scoring with 53 before he was caught by Ntini, the first black player to play for his country. The 33-year-old Ntini failed to take a wicket as he conceded 46 runs in his farewell match, but that detail failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the 47,000-capacity crowd, who gave the 101-Test veteran a rousing reception.
